Guardian of The Pink Preserve

Born and raised Dean L Mullings Jr (b.1997) on the vibrant shores of Great Inagua, Bahamas, my lifelong passion for art is deeply intertwined with the natural heritage of my home. The island’s majestic flamingos serve as my primary muse, carrying profound personal significance that traces back to my family’s history—my great-grandfather, Samuel Nixon (pictured), and his brother, James “Jimmy” Nixon, served as the pioneering first wardens of Inagua National Park and were foundational figures in The Bahamas National Trust.

My creative journey began in childhood, fueled by an undeniable urge to draw and sustained by the unwavering support of my mother. Every trip to Nassau included an essential visit to Bahamian Paint or Book World for art supplies, where her quiet encouragement and complete trust in my passion laid the groundwork for my artistic path.

While my early years were marked by self-guided exploration, my artistic vision gained structure and clarity in 2005 under the guidance of my first formal instructor, Rebecca Valrejean ("Ms. V"). She provided the foundational coherence my work needed. Ms. V later introduced me to hyperrealist colored pencil artist Kim Smith; together, these two mentors profoundly enriched my technical skills and artistic intuition, serving as pivotal figures in my creative development.

Today, while colored pencils remain my signature medium, my practice continues to evolve through the exploration of oil and acrylic paints, pastels, graphite, and charcoal—capturing the rich textures, color, and spirit of the Bahamian fauna.
